VMware and Hyper-V management, and a clear path off VMware
VMware licensing has changed, and many businesses are rethinking where their servers run. Nexxo manages your current VMware environment while you decide, then plans and runs a careful move to Microsoft Hyper-V or Azure if that is the right call. No rushed cutovers, no surprises.
Request a virtualization assessmentLeaving VMware without putting your business at risk
For many SMBs, a VMware to Hyper-V migration went from a someday project to a real question once Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware in late 2023. VMware moved to subscription-only licensing with bundled offerings and ended the sale of perpetual licences, and renewal costs and terms changed significantly for many businesses. Older versions are also aging out: vSphere 7 reached end of general support in October 2025. Left unmanaged, this leads to rushed decisions: a renewal signed under pressure, or a weekend migration with no tested way back. Meanwhile, the hosts go unpatched and nobody checks the backups. Nexxo takes this off your plate. We keep your existing VMware environment patched, monitored and backed up while you decide. We review your licences and options in plain language, including when staying on VMware is the right call. And if moving is the better path, we plan and run the migration to Hyper-V or Azure, one server at a time, with a backup and a rollback plan for every step.
VMware environment care
We keep your existing vSphere and ESXi hosts patched, monitored and backed up while you weigh your options. Your virtual machines keep running safely, and you make the licensing decision on your own timeline, not because something broke.
Licence and options review
We inventory your hosts, virtual machines and current VMware licences, then lay out your realistic options: renew, move to Hyper-V on Windows Server, move some workloads to Azure, or a mix. You get plain-language tradeoffs, not a sales pitch.
Planned Hyper-V migration
We move your virtual machines to Microsoft Hyper-V on Windows Server, starting with a pilot on a non-critical server. Each cutover is scheduled with you, outside business hours where possible, with a tested rollback plan if anything does not behave as expected.
High availability with Hyper-V
Hyper-V supports live migration, failover clustering and Hyper-V Replica. We use them where they fit, so a host can be patched without shutting down your virtual machines, a failed server can fail over to another, and key machines can be replicated to a second location.
Backups before every move
Veeam backups are taken and verified before each move, so every virtual machine has a recent copy to return to. Veeam works with both VMware and Hyper-V, which keeps your protection consistent before, during and after the migration.
Monitoring after cutover
After each migration, we watch performance, storage and backup jobs closely, adjust what needs adjusting and confirm your applications behave as before. Your new Hyper-V hosts then join our proactive monitoring, with our 24/7 support team behind them.
Our 4-step VMware to Hyper-V migration approach
Inventory and review
We list every host, virtual machine, application and dependency, and review your VMware licences and renewal dates. We also note which servers hold personal information. Then we recommend a path: stay, move to Hyper-V, move to Azure, or a combination.
Size and pilot
We check compatibility, size your new Hyper-V hosts or Azure resources, and plan your Windows Server licensing. Then we migrate one non-critical virtual machine as a pilot, so the method is proven before anything important moves.
Scheduled cutovers
We move the remaining servers in planned waves, scheduled with you to limit disruption. A verified Veeam backup is taken before each move, and every cutover has a written rollback plan in case a server needs to go back to VMware.
Monitor and hand off
We monitor the new environment closely, tune performance, confirm backups run, and retire the old VMware hosts only when you are ready. You receive updated documentation, and the platform stays under our proactive monitoring and 24/7 support.
Moving servers means moving personal information. Plan it that way.
The servers you migrate hold client and employee information. Under Québec’s Law 25, that information must stay protected throughout the project, and you need to know where it lives afterward. Nexxo plans every migration as a controlled change that supports your obligations. Backups are taken and encrypted before anything moves, access is limited to the people doing the work, and we document where each server and its data end up, whether on your premises or in Azure’s Canadian datacenter regions. If personal information would be transferred outside Québec, an assessment is required first, and we help you prepare it.
- Encrypted backups firstEvery server is backed up, with encryption, before it moves, so personal information is not exposed or lost during the migration.
- Restricted project accessOnly the people working on the migration get access to your systems, and that access is removed once the project is complete.
- Documented data locationsYou get a clear record of where each server and its data now live, on your premises or in Azure’s Canadian regions.
- Incident plan readyIf something goes wrong, we contain it, help you record it in your incident register and support notifying the CAI when required.

A managed migration versus going it alone
Moving virtual machines yourself is technically possible. What protects your business is the planning around it: backups, a pilot, a way back and someone watching afterward.

Contact Us →Why are so many businesses leaving VMware?
Since Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware in late 2023, VMware has moved to subscription-only licensing with bundled offerings and ended the sale of perpetual licences. For many SMBs, renewal costs and terms changed significantly, and some now pay for features they do not use. That has pushed many to look at a VMware alternative such as Microsoft Hyper-V. Leaving is not automatically the right answer, though. We help you compare your options based on your real needs.
What is Hyper-V, and is it a real VMware alternative?
Hyper-V is Microsoft’s hypervisor, the software that runs virtual machines, and it is included with Windows Server. It supports the features most SMBs rely on, including live migration, failover clustering for high availability and replication with Hyper-V Replica. Windows Server Datacenter licensing covers unlimited Windows Server virtual machines on the licensed host. For most small and mid-sized environments, it is a solid choice. Some specialized setups are better served elsewhere, and we tell you if yours is one of them.
Do we need to leave VMware if our current setup works fine?
Not necessarily. If your licensing is under control, your hardware is current and your team depends on VMware-specific tools, staying can be the right call, at least for now. What matters is running a supported version: vSphere 7 reached end of general support in October 2025, and general support for vSphere 8 is scheduled to end in October 2027. We help you plan around those dates, and we manage VMware properly for as long as you keep it.
Do we need Azure, or can we keep our servers on-premises?
Either works, and many businesses use both. Hyper-V on Windows Server keeps your virtual machines on your own hardware, which suits businesses with recent servers or applications that need to stay local. Azure makes sense for workloads that benefit from cloud flexibility, or when your hardware is due for replacement anyway. Azure has Canadian datacenter regions, which helps keep your data in Canada. We recommend the right mix based on your applications and your hardware.
What affects the cost of a VMware to Hyper-V migration?
The main factors are the number of hosts and virtual machines, how much data they hold, how complex your applications and their dependencies are, whether your existing hardware can be reused and which Windows Server licences you need. The number of cutover windows, any work outside business hours and whether some workloads move to Azure also play a part. After an inventory and assessment, we give you a clear proposal based on your actual environment.
How does the migration work, and will we have downtime?
Each server needs a short planned outage while it is switched over, so we schedule cutovers with you, often outside business hours. Before anything important moves, we run a pilot on a non-critical virtual machine to prove the method. A Veeam backup is taken and verified before each move, and every cutover has a rollback plan. In most cases, your team logs in the next morning to the same applications, now running on Hyper-V.
Does Law 25 affect a server migration?
Yes, because the servers you move usually hold personal information about clients and employees. Law 25 expects that information to stay protected, so we treat the migration as a controlled change: encrypted backups first, restricted access during the project and clear documentation of where data lives afterward. If personal information would be transferred outside Québec, a privacy impact assessment is required first. This approach supports your obligations; it is not legal advice.
Who supports our virtual servers day to day?
Nexxo does, whether you run VMware, Hyper-V or both. Our team monitors your hosts and virtual machines proactively, applies updates, keeps an eye on storage and backup jobs, and handles issues before they affect your staff. When you need help, you contact our dedicated team, and 24/7 support is there for urgent problems such as a host failure. You get one team for the whole platform, not a different contact for each piece.
